Understanding Fire Safety

Paint booths present significant fire hazards due to flammable materials, vapors, and overspray. Proper fire safety combines prevention through design and maintenance, protection through suppression systems, and preparation through training and procedures. Understanding fire safety requirements protects your people, property, and business.

Key Requirements

1

Fire Prevention

Preventing fires is the first line of defense:

  • Adequate ventilation to prevent vapor accumulation
  • Proper electrical classification eliminates ignition sources
  • Regular cleaning prevents combustible accumulation
  • Proper storage and handling of flammables
  • No smoking or open flames in spray areas
2

Fire Detection

Early detection enables fast response:

  • Heat detectors rated for paint booth environment
  • Flame detectors where appropriate
  • Integration with suppression systems
  • Alarms to alert personnel
3

Fire Suppression

Suppression systems control fires when prevention fails:

  • Automatic sprinklers over and in spray areas
  • Dry chemical suppression in enclosed booths
  • Water mist or foam systems where appropriate
  • Interlock to shut down ventilation and spray
4

Emergency Response

Proper response minimizes damage and injury:

  • Trained personnel who know procedures
  • Appropriate fire extinguishers accessible
  • Clear evacuation routes and procedures
  • Emergency shutdown procedures posted

Fire Safety Compliance FAQ

Most paint booths use wet pipe sprinklers with dry chemical or water mist systems inside the spray area. The best system depends on booth type, materials used, and local requirements. WERCS can advise on optimal protection.
NFPA requires semi-annual inspection of dry chemical systems and annual inspection of sprinkler systems. Some insurers require more frequent inspection. WERCS coordinates with fire protection contractors as needed.
Class B extinguishers rated for flammable liquid fires are required in spray areas. Most paint booths have 20-lb dry chemical extinguishers. Extinguishers should be inspected monthly and professionally serviced annually.
Training should cover: activate emergency stop, evacuate the area, sound alarm, call fire department, and only attempt extinguishment if trained and safe to do so. Never re-enter a burning spray booth.
