Fresh air enters through intake filters — typically ceiling-mounted diffusion media or pleated panels in your air makeup unit. These remove dust, pollen, and ambient debris before air reaches the spray zone. Contaminated intake air is the #1 cause of "fish-eye" defects and dirt-in-finish problems.
Paint-laden air exits through exhaust filters that capture overspray particles. Standard pads work for light spraying; high-capacity arrestors are better for production environments. Overloaded exhaust filters cause back-pressure, reduced airflow, and overspray contamination on fresh finishes.
If your permit requires it, activated carbon filters adsorb volatile organic compounds before exhaust exits the stack. Carbon filters have a finite capacity and must be replaced on schedule — breakthrough means you're out of compliance and potentially affecting neighbors with paint odors.
