First line of defense. Protect downstream filters. Save money.
Pre-filters are your economical first stage of filtration — they capture larger particles and extend the life of more expensive downstream filters. Positioned before your main exhaust filters, intake pleats, or carbon beds, pre-filters take the brunt of the loading and are designed for frequent, inexpensive replacement. A smart pre-filter program can significantly reduce your total filtration cost.
More frequently than your main filters — that's the point. Weekly or bi-weekly changes are common. The goal is to load the cheap pre-filter, not the expensive final filter.
If your main filters (especially carbon) are expensive, pre-filters almost always pay for themselves by extending final filter life. Calculate the cost per change for each stage.
MERV 4-8 is typical — enough to catch large particles without excessive restriction. Higher efficiency pre-filters can cause premature loading without providing proportional benefit.
