Signs of Makeup Air Unit (MAU) Failure

Booth not reaching temperature setpoint
Insufficient supply airflow
Unit making unusual noises
Excessive energy consumption
Inconsistent temperature control
Unit not starting on demand
Refrigerant leaks or cooling issues

What Causes Makeup Air Unit (MAU) Failure

Understanding the root cause helps determine whether repair or replacement is the best option.

Burner Problems

common

Gas burner issues (covered in burner component pages).

Filter Loading

common

Dirty filters restricting airflow through unit.

Fan/Motor Issues

occasional

Supply fan belt, bearing, or motor problems.

Control Problems

occasional

Temperature controller, damper actuators, or sensor failures.

Refrigeration Failure

occasional

DX cooling system issues (if equipped).

Repair vs. Replace Decision Guide

Repair When...

  • Individual components can be replaced
  • Burner can be serviced or replaced
  • Controls can be upgraded
  • Unit structure is sound

Replace When...

  • Unit is severely corroded
  • Major components obsolete
  • Capacity increase needed
  • Energy efficiency upgrade desired
  • Converting from direct-fired to indirect-fired

Cost Comparison

Component repairs $300-3,000. Burner replacement $5,000-15,000. Complete MAU replacement $25,000-100,000+ depending on size.

Lifespan Considerations

MAUs are major capital equipment. Proper maintenance extends life; premature replacement is expensive.

Makeup Air Unit (MAU) Service FAQ

Common questions about makeup air unit (mau) repair and replacement

A makeup air unit (MAU) supplies tempered fresh air to your paint booth to replace the air being exhausted. It typically includes filters, heating (and sometimes cooling), and a supply fan. The MAU maintains proper booth pressure and temperature for quality finishing.
Common causes include undersized burner, worn components reducing efficiency, dirty filters restricting airflow, damper problems, or control issues. Very cold outside temperatures can exceed design capacity. WERCS can diagnose and resolve heating issues.
Direct-fired units put combustion gases directly into the supply air (higher efficiency, some applications restricted). Indirect-fired units use a heat exchanger to separate combustion from supply air (required for some coatings and industries). Both types require regular service.
