Paint Booth Belt Failure

A failed belt stops your fan immediately. Here's what to do and how to prevent future failures.

What You're Experiencing

The drive belt connecting the motor to the exhaust or supply fan has broken, thrown off, or failed, causing loss of fan function.

Visual Signs:

  • Belt hanging loose or completely off pulleys
  • Belt broken in pieces
  • Fan wheel not turning despite motor running
  • Belt rubber fragments on floor
  • Motor running but no airflow

Sound Signs:

  • Motor running but no fan noise
  • Flapping sound if belt is loose but still on
  • Sudden silence from fan area

Safety Risks — Read Before Proceeding

Loss of ventilation

Action: Do NOT paint without exhaust. A failed belt on the exhaust fan is a safety emergency.

Belt debris hazard

Action: Failed belts can throw debris. Ensure area is clear during failure.

Immediate Steps to Take

  1. 1

    STOP all painting operations immediately

  2. 2

Confirm belt is failed (motor runs but fan doesn't turn)

  3. 3

    Locate spare belts if available

  4. 4

Lock out/tag out before belt replacement

  5. 5

Remove old belt pieces and inspect pulleys

  6. 6

Install new belt with correct tension

  7. 7

    Test fan operation before resuming

Common Causes

Here are the most likely reasons you're experiencing this problem, ranked by how often we see them.

Belt Wear and Age

common

The belt has reached end of life after extended use. V-belts typically last 1-3 years depending on operating conditions.

Improper Tension

common

Belt was too loose (causing slippage and heat) or too tight (causing accelerated wear).

Pulley Misalignment

occasional

Motor and fan pulleys were not properly aligned, causing edge wear and failure.

Oil or Debris Contamination

occasional

Oil, grease, or debris weakened the belt material, leading to premature failure.

Shock Loading

occasional

Sudden startup or speed changes stressed the belt beyond its capacity.

Wrong Belt Type

rare

An incorrect belt size or type was installed that wasn't rated for the application.

Step 1 of 5

Do you have a spare belt on hand?

If unsafe at any point: Belt failure stops exhaust. This is a safety emergency. Do not attempt to paint. Call WERCS at (877) 489-3727 for same-day belt service.

When to Call WERCS

While some issues can be resolved with basic troubleshooting, these situations require professional service:

  • Belt has failed and you don't have spares
  • Multiple belt failures in short period
  • Pulleys need replacement
  • You need help with belt installation
  • Time for preventive belt replacement
  • Emergency same-day service needed

Paint Booth Belt Failure FAQ

Common questions about this issue

Best practice is annual replacement as preventive maintenance. Don't wait for failure—belt replacement during PM is much cheaper than emergency service plus lost production.
Keep at least 2 complete sets of belts for each belt-driven fan. If you have a multi-belt drive, keep full matched sets. Label them clearly with the fan they fit.
Never. Running a multi-belt drive with missing belts overloads the remaining belts and causes rapid failure. It also runs the fan at reduced capacity, potentially below safe airflow levels.
Most paint booth fans use standard V-belts (A, B, or C section depending on size). Cogged V-belts run cooler and last longer. For high-temperature applications (cure ovens), use belts rated for elevated temperatures. WERCS can recommend the right belt for your application.
