Paint Booth Lighting Issues

Proper lighting is critical for quality finishes. Here's how to troubleshoot booth lighting problems safely.

What You're Experiencing

Lighting in the paint booth is not functioning correctly. This may include lights not turning on, flickering, reduced brightness, or visible damage to...

Visual Signs:

  • One or more light fixtures not illuminating
  • Lights flickering or cycling on and off
  • Noticeably dimmer than normal
  • Visible damage to light fixture or lens
  • Discoloration of fixture indicating overheating
  • Paint or debris buildup on lenses reducing light

Sound Signs:

  • Buzzing or humming from ballasts (fluorescent)
  • Clicking sounds from fixture

Safety Risks — Read Before Proceeding

critical(NEC Article 500, NFPA 33 Section 7.5)

Non-rated fixtures in hazardous area

Action: All lighting in classified areas MUST be rated for the hazardous location. Never install standard fixtures.

critical(NEC Article 500.8)

Damaged explosion-proof integrity

Action: Cracked lenses, missing hardware, or improper modifications compromise explosion-proof rating. Do not operate.

Poor lighting affecting finish quality

Action: Inadequate lighting leads to missed defects and poor quality work. Painters need proper illumination.

Immediate Steps to Take

  1. 1

Note which fixtures are affected (all or specific ones)

  2. 2

Check if lighting circuit breaker is tripped

  3. 3

Look for visible damage to fixtures or wiring

  4. 4

Check condition of lens covers (overspray buildup)

  5. 5

For LED fixtures, note any indicator lights on driver

  6. 6

Check if problem is intermittent or constant

  7. 7

Do NOT open explosion-proof fixtures with power on

Common Causes

Here are the most likely reasons you're experiencing this problem, ranked by how often we see them.

Lamp/Bulb Failure

common

The light source itself (LED, fluorescent tube, or HID lamp) has burned out or degraded. This is normal wear.

Driver/Ballast Failure

common

The electronic driver (LED) or ballast (fluorescent) has failed, preventing proper lamp operation even if lamp is good.

Dirty or Damaged Lens

common

The light lens/cover is coated with overspray, dust, or damage that significantly reduces light output.

Wiring or Connection Issue

occasional

Loose connections, corroded terminals, or damaged wiring in the lighting circuit causing intermittent or no operation.

Circuit Breaker or Fuse

occasional

The lighting circuit breaker has tripped or fuse has blown, affecting one or more fixtures.

Overheating

rare

Fixtures are overheating due to ambient temperature, failed cooling, or being undersized for the enclosure.

Are all booth lights out, or just specific fixtures?

If unsafe at any point: If you see sparking, burning, or smoke from any light fixture, de-energize immediately at the breaker. Do not operate booth until fixture is repaired or replaced. Call WERCS at (877) 489-3727.

When to Call WERCS

Paint Booth Lighting Issues FAQ

Common questions about this issue

Paint booths contain flammable vapors, making them classified hazardous locations under the NEC. Standard light fixtures can create sparks or hot surfaces that could ignite these vapors. Explosion-proof (Class I rated) fixtures are designed to contain any internal ignition and prevent external ignition.
Lamp replacement in explosion-proof fixtures requires proper procedures: de-energize the circuit, use correct replacement lamp rated for the fixture, ensure all gaskets and hardware are properly installed to maintain the hazardous location rating. If unsure, have a qualified person do it.
LED lighting offers significant benefits: better light quality for color matching, lower energy use, longer lamp life, less heat output, and instant-on operation. WERCS can provide explosion-proof LED retrofits or new fixtures that meet hazardous location requirements.
Paint booth lighting should provide at least 100 foot-candles at the work surface for quality painting. Many shops prefer 150+ foot-candles for detailed work. Even illumination without shadows is important. WERCS can evaluate your current lighting and recommend improvements.
