Safety Risks — Read Before Proceeding

medium

Poor visibility causing defects

Action: Inadequate lighting leads to missed defects and rework. Delay painting until lighting is adequate.

critical(NEC Article 500, NFPA 33)

Non-compliant lighting creates ignition risk

Action: All lighting in Class I areas must be listed for the location. Never use non-rated fixtures.

low

Eye strain and fatigue

Action: Poor lighting causes worker fatigue and errors over time.

Immediate Steps to Take

  1. 1

Identify which lights are affected (all or specific fixtures)

  2. 2

    Check light switches and breakers

  3. 3

Look for obvious damage or overspray on fixtures

  4. 4

    Note any flickering or buzzing

  5. 5

Verify booth is de-energized before fixture inspection

  6. 6

    Do NOT substitute non-rated fixtures

Common Causes

Here are the most likely reasons you're experiencing this problem, ranked by how often we see them.

Bulb/LED Failure

common

Light sources have reached end of life or failed prematurely. Fluorescent tubes and LEDs all have limited lifespan.

Ballast/Driver Failure

common

Electronic ballasts (fluorescent) or LED drivers have failed, preventing light operation.

Wiring Issues

occasional

Loose connections, corroded terminals, or damaged wiring in the hazardous location.

Switch/Control Problem

occasional

Light switch, contactor, or control circuit has failed.

Overspray Coating

occasional

Paint overspray has coated light covers or tubes, reducing light output.

Fixture Damage

rare

Explosion-proof fixture gaskets or seals have failed, or fixture housing is damaged.

Paint Booth Lighting Problems FAQ

Common questions about this issue

Paint booths are classified as hazardous locations (typically Class I, Division 1 or 2) due to flammable vapors. Standard lighting fixtures can create ignition sources through sparks, hot surfaces, or arcs. Explosion-proof fixtures contain any internal explosion and prevent ignition of external atmospheres.
Yes, LED upgrades are excellent for paint booths. LEDs provide: better color rendering for paint matching, lower energy costs, longer life, and less heat. However, LED fixtures must still be rated for the hazardous location classification. WERCS can help select and install compliant LED fixtures.
OSHA requires minimum 50 foot-candles for general painting. For color-critical work (automotive refinish, aerospace), 100-150 foot-candles is recommended. Color temperature of 5000-6500K provides best color rendering for paint inspection.
Light covers should be cleaned weekly in active booths—overspray accumulates quickly and reduces output. Include lens cleaning in your preventive maintenance routine. Some facilities use protective films on lenses for easier cleaning.
