Paint Booth Not Exhausting

Complete exhaust failure is a safety emergency. Stop

What You're Experiencing

The paint booth is not exhausting fumes at all. Overspray is not being pulled out of the booth, solvent vapors are accumulating, and there is no perceptible...

Visual Signs:

  • No air movement visible in booth
  • Overspray hanging in the air instead of being pulled out
  • Manometer showing zero or near-zero reading
  • Exhaust fan visibly not spinning

Sound Signs:

  • Complete silence from exhaust fan area
  • Motor humming but fan not spinning
  • Unusual clicking or buzzing from electrical panel

Safety Risks — Read Before Proceeding

critical(NFPA 33 Section 7.5)

Explosive atmosphere in booth

Action: STOP ALL PAINTING. Evacuate booth area. No ignition sources.

critical(OSHA 1910.146)

Oxygen-deficient atmosphere

Action: Do not enter booth without proper respiratory protection and LEL monitoring.

high(OSHA PEL limits)

Acute solvent exposure

Action: All personnel must leave booth area immediately.

Immediate Steps to Take

  1. 1

    STOP all painting operations immediately

  2. 2

Evacuate personnel from booth and surrounding area

  3. 3

Do not use any ignition sources (no welding, grinding, smoking)

  4. 4

Check if exhaust fan disconnect/breaker is on

  5. 5

Look at exhaust fan—is it spinning at all?

  6. 6

    Check VFD for fault codes

  7. 7

Call WERCS emergency line if issue cannot be immediately resolved

Common Causes

Here are the most likely reasons you're experiencing this problem, ranked by how often we see them.

Electrical Supply Failure

common

The circuit breaker has tripped, disconnect switch is off, or there's a power supply issue to the exhaust fan motor.

Belt Failure

common

The drive belt connecting motor to fan has completely broken. The motor runs but the fan doesn't spin.

Motor Failure

occasional

The exhaust fan motor has failed due to overheating, bearing seizure, or electrical fault.

VFD Fault

occasional

The variable frequency drive has faulted and shut down the motor. Check for fault codes on the VFD display.

Safety Interlock Tripped

occasional

A safety interlock (door switch, fire suppression, gas detection) has tripped and shut down the exhaust system.

Control System Failure

rare

PLC or control panel has faulted, preventing the exhaust fan from receiving the run command.

Step 1 of 5

Is the exhaust fan motor running (can you hear it)?

If unsafe at any point: Complete exhaust failure is a safety emergency. If you cannot restore ventilation within 15 minutes, call WERCS emergency service at (877) 489-3727.

When to Call WERCS

While some issues can be resolved with basic troubleshooting, these situations require professional service:

  • You cannot identify why the fan stopped
  • The motor is not running and won't start
  • Belt replacement is needed
  • VFD continues to fault after reset
  • Any safety interlock issue you cannot resolve
  • You need emergency restoration of ventilation

Paint Booth Not Exhausting FAQ

Common questions about this issue

Solvent vapors can reach explosive concentrations (LEL) within minutes in an enclosed booth without ventilation. This is why complete exhaust failure is treated as an emergency. Never attempt to paint without verified exhaust operation.
Opening doors provides some natural ventilation but does NOT make the booth safe for painting. You must have mechanical exhaust restored and verified before any painting operations resume.
Stop spraying immediately. Exit the booth calmly—do not rush (to avoid creating sparks). Allow time for natural dissipation of vapors before investigating. Never re-enter a booth with unknown vapor concentrations without LEL monitoring.
