Sensor Fault Troubleshooting
Sensors are the eyes and ears of your booth control system. When they fail, here's how to diagnose.
What You're Experiencing
A sensor in the paint booth system is indicating a fault, reading incorrectly, or has failed completely.
Visual Signs:
- Sensor fault code on display
- Reading shows impossible value (0, max, or frozen)
- Indicator light for sensor fault
- Control system in fault or safe mode
- Mismatch between sensor reading and reality
Sound Signs:
- Alarm buzzer for sensor fault
- System behaving as if readings were different
Safety Risks — Read Before Proceeding
False safety assurance
Action: If safety sensors (LEL, airflow) are faulty, do not operate booth until verified or replaced.
Process out of control
Action: Temperature or airflow sensors affecting cure or ventilation must be accurate for quality and safety.
Immediate Steps to Take
- 1
Note the specific sensor and fault type
- 2
Compare sensor reading to independent measurement if possible
- 3
Check sensor for visible contamination or damage
- 4
Verify wiring connections at sensor and controller
- 5
Check power supply to sensor
- 6
Try cleaning sensor element if accessible
- 7
Check if sensor can be recalibrated
Common Causes
Here are the most likely reasons you're experiencing this problem, ranked by how often we see them.
Sensor Drift/Calibration
commonSensor has drifted out of calibration and is reading incorrectly. Common with age and contamination.
Contamination
commonSensor element is contaminated with paint, dust, or debris affecting readings.
Wiring Issues
occasionalLoose connection, damaged wire, or corroded terminal affecting signal.
Sensor Failure
occasionalSensor element has failed due to age, damage, or environmental stress.
Power Supply Problem
rareSensor not receiving proper power supply voltage.
Controller Input Failure
rareThe input channel on the controller has failed, not the sensor itself.

Step 1 of 5
Is the sensor reading frozen or showing impossible value?
If unsafe at any point: If safety sensors cannot be trusted and booth must operate, use alternative safety measures and call WERCS at (877) 489-3727.
When to Call WERCS
While some issues can be resolved with basic troubleshooting, these situations require professional service:
- Safety sensor (LEL, airflow) fault
- Cannot calibrate sensor in field
- Multiple sensors failing
- Need sensor replacement
- Wiring issues suspected
- Controller problems possible
