Visible damage to igniter element

What Causes Ignition Module/Igniter Failure

Understanding the root cause helps determine whether repair or replacement is the best option.

Normal Wear

common

Igniters have limited lifespan—hot surface igniters typically 3-5 years, spark igniters 5-7 years.

Cracked Igniter

common

Hot surface igniter has developed cracks from thermal cycling.

Contamination

occasional

Igniter coated with soot, oil, or other deposits preventing proper operation.

Electrical Issues

occasional

Wiring damage or connection problems preventing power to igniter.

Control Module Failure

occasional

The ignition control board itself has failed.

Repair vs. Replace Decision Guide

Repair When...

  • Wiring or connections can be repaired
  • Control module is available

Replace When...

  • Igniter element is cracked or worn
  • Repeated failures indicate underlying issues
  • Upgrading to more reliable ignition type

Cost Comparison

Igniter replacement $150-400 including labor. Control module replacement $400-800.

Lifespan Considerations

Igniters are wear items. Keep spares on hand for quick replacement.

Ignition Module/Igniter Service FAQ

Common questions about ignition module/igniter repair and replacement

Most paint booth burners use either hot surface igniters (ceramic element that glows red-hot) or spark igniters (electrical spark). Older systems may have standing pilots. Check your burner documentation or call WERCS for identification.
Hot surface igniters should glow bright orange when powered. If it doesn't glow, glows dimly, or has visible cracks, it needs replacement. Spark igniters should produce a consistent spark—listen for clicking and look for spark at the electrode.
While physically simple, working on gas-fired equipment requires proper training and understanding of safety interlocks. Improper installation can create fire/explosion hazards. We recommend professional service.
